Hi! My mid-term test has finished yesterday (yaaayy!!) and yesterday, I had a time to spend with my girls and had a time to spend with myself. What I did was giving myself a good movie to learn from. I know that movie accidentally while browsing through youtube several weeks ago but had just had a time yesterday. And that movie was VERY GOOD oh my God.
This post ain't gonna be a movie review. I wanna share the lessons I learned from this movie. The movie is called "Suddenly Seventeen". It is a remake from a western movie titled "17 again."
1/3: Never lose yourself for a man.
Yes, yes! This is the first lesson I learned from this movie ever since the beginning. The main female character, Liang, has been in a relationship with his boyfriend, Mao, for 10 years. She's currently 28 and Mao hasn't proposed to her yet. She was desperate. Then a magic chocolate turns her mind to her 17 self. She was very different back then in her 17. She was so lively, so young, so cheerful, so plain, sincere, live with passion, and so.... alive. She had a dream back then to study in France, to become a famous painter. But she's not yet a painter at 28.
It should be the same person, for sure, but it feels like they both are a different person. It's somehow fascinating what time could do to us. 10 years can really change a person totally into someone else, even change into the opposite of the 'myself' we know. In this movie, she has changed because of her relationship with Mao causing her to lose her dream, to lose her passion, and making her not 'her' anymore. She becomes stiff, lacking self-confidence, because she's so afraid Mao will turn away from her. And truth be told, he did after 10 years.
It was because she's not the her 10 years ago back then when she was 18. The 18 her was still so bold, passionate, lively, not like her 28 years old self. She has lost her. She lost her passion of her younger self. Mao is her barrier in this movie, because he made her back off from her hobby which is happened to be drawing. She didn't do anything about it because she was freakin blinded with love. The love she had made her afraid to confront Mao. She was so afraid of losing him, so she let her dreams go instead. Please, stay true to your heart and pursue your dream, even when "the man you think the one" doesn't allow you to do so.
Wake up, girls! Live is not about a man! Life is about you! Knowing about yourself, finding your true self and maintaing it, what do you want, pursuing your life-time dreams and goals. You just don't give up your dreams of 17 years of your life only for a man. You're so much worthy than that.
2/3: Relationship could change you in either a positive or negative way.
It can be seen already that the relationship changed Liang in a negative way, which she lost her dreams and her passion in drawing. She dumped her dream, roughly, because of him. She was alive when she was younger because of her dream, because the fire inside her heart that lit her life and made her shone. And when she made that fire off, she started losing herself. This is the negative side I told, but actually there will be always a positive change too. Liang also has a positive change because of this relationship because she's grown maturer.
It all depends on you guys, whether you want the relationship to change you in a positive or negative way. The choice is in your hands.
3/3: Keep being yourself. Don't forget your 'younger' self that filled with hope and love and amusement of being an adult in life. Remember your dreams. Remember your wishes.
The 17 years old her gradually reminds her to once again pursue her dreams (she does this implicitly, because of the situation the 28 self was facing too), reminding her of her talent which she had abandoned for so long. The 28 and 17 years old were together embracing each other flaws to build 'herself' slowly once again, to revise the version of herself that had been changed. The younger self keeps on supporting the 28 with the lively, the boldness, the sincerity, the passion, the love, and the life. They both had and have a dream, but forgotten by the older self. It disappoint the younger one.
Don't worry. You still can make it up even you feel like you've dumped your dream. No need to be sorry for your younger self because sorry doesn't change anything. You need to get up and remind yourself what is your real purpose, what is your real dream in this life, what is your passion, what are you meant to be. Remember to have fun, no matter how old you can get. Remember to stay 'alive', remember to do what you like for ages, remember your cheer, your love, your passion, your fire, your dreams, when you were younger.
